An Outline of the Waldorf Curriculum

Kindergarten is an extension of the family experience. The goal is to provide a warm, calm, aesthetic environment in which the child will flourish. The three R’s are Reverence, Repetition, and Rhythm. This is a time for unfolding imagination and creativity through art, music, movement, stories, and experience of the natural world.

1st Grade: Pictorial and phonetic introduction to letters; form drawing, reading approached through writing; qualities of numbers; introduction of the four processes in arithmetic and multiplication tables; fairy tales, folk tales and nature stories.

2nd Grade: Reading through writing and recitation, basic elements of grammar; solidification of the processes of arithmetic; form drawing; nature study through observation. Heroes, heroines, saints, legends, and animal fables.

3rd Grade: Reading, spelling, writing, original compositions, cursive writing; form drawing; higher multiplication tables, weight, measurement and money. Study of practical life: farming, housing, clothing. Old Testament stories introduce history.

4th Grade: Composition, reading, letter writing, grammar; form drawing; local geography and map making; Local history; study of the animal kingdom; fractions and decimals. Norse mythology and sagas.

5th Grade: American geography related to vegetation, agriculture and economics; composition, grammar, spelling, reading; arithmetic, decimals, ratio and proportion; botany; form drawing. Greek myths, Egyptian and other ancient civilizations through Greek times.

6th Grade: Roman and medieval history, Mohammad and Islamic culture, and Arthurian legends; North/South American geography, geology and selected units in physics; composition, grammar, spelling, biographies; geometric drawing with instrument and astronomy.

Our teachers develop a curriculum guided by the principles of Waldorf education. The skilled faculty integrates academic education with emotional and spiritual growth. Self-discipline, self-expression, and the wholeness of life are themes the teachers weave into every lesson. Students explore essential subjects of reading, writing and mathematics through a rich and classical curriculum.
